What a UAE TRC is, and who issues it
A Tax Residency Certificate is issued by the Federal Tax Authority to confirm that a company or individual is tax resident in the UAE. It is mainly used to claim the benefit of a double tax agreement — for example, a lower withholding tax rate abroad — or to prove residency to a bank or client.
Who qualifies for a UAE TRC
Tax residency is set by Cabinet Decision No. 85 of 2022. Companies and individuals are tested differently.
Companies
- Incorporated, established or recognised under UAE law — free-zone companies included
- Or effectively managed and controlled in the UAE, with evidence where the FTA asks for it
- Established for at least 12 months before applying
- Can apply 3 months into the period the certificate will cover
Individuals — any one test
- In the UAE for 183 days or more in a 12-month period
- In the UAE for 90 days or more, holding UAE or GCC nationality or a valid UAE residence permit, with a permanent home or a job or business in the UAE
- Usual or main place of residence and centre of financial and personal interests in the UAE
What the FTA charges
Every application pays a submission fee, plus a review and issuance fee that depends on who is applying. FTA fees are paid to the FTA at cost; our own fee is a fixed quote agreed upfront.
| FTA fee | AED |
|---|---|
| Submission fee (every application) | 50 |
| Review and issuance — Corporate Tax registrant | 500 |
| Review and issuance — individual without a Corporate Tax TRN | 1,000 |
| Review and issuance — company without a Corporate Tax TRN | 1,750 |
| Hard copy of the certificate (each) | 250 |
FTA fees are not refunded if an application is rejected — which is why we check eligibility and documents first.

How long does it take to get a UAE Tax Residency Certificate?
The FTA aims to issue a TRC within 10 business days of a complete application, and hard copies within a further 5 business days. Incomplete applications are what cause delays.
Can a newly set-up company get a UAE TRC?
Not straight away. The FTA requires a company to have been incorporated or established for at least 12 months before it can apply for a Tax Residency Certificate.
How much does a UAE Tax Residency Certificate cost?
FTA fees are AED 50 to submit, plus AED 500 for Corporate Tax registrants, AED 1,000 for individuals without a Corporate Tax TRN, or AED 1,750 for companies without one. Each hard copy costs AED 250.
How long is a UAE TRC valid?
A TRC covers the period you select when applying — a tax period or any other 12-month period. A treaty TRC is issued for one specific treaty country; a domestic TRC is used for other purposes.
